The Long Pose

February 15, 2026

Patiently, these trees stand through the seasons waiting for their picture to be taken or waiting for someone with as much patience as they have to paint their portrait.

I wonder which came first, the wall or the trees? I suspect it is the wall which would make it a very old wall, dating perhaps to the early 1800s. In this part of New England that would not be unheard of.

The wall maintains a straight line past the trees. There is no evidence someone tried to curve the wall around the trees. There is evidence the trees have made an effort to bend away from the stone.

Some people believe trees have a soul and can communicate - at least with each other - through their root systems.

I wonder which season of the year is their favorite? Is it winter when they feel light and free from the burden of their leaves? The spring, when they stretch for the sun? Summer with its constant warmth? Or the fall, when they put on their colorful outfits of yellow, orange and red?

I wonder.
